West Lake is a designed cultural landscape rather than a single viewpoint. Its meaning comes from the relationship between the lake, two great causeways, islands, framed views, historic gardens, temples and the city that grew around them. A good route changes scale repeatedly: broad water at Hubin, intimate gardens on Gushan, long perspectives from Su Causeway and wooded religious landscapes towards Lingyin. That variety is why a slow, selective visit is better than chasing every named scene.
