The Stone Forest Scenic Area lies in Shilin Yi Autonomous County (石林彝族自治县), fora de Kunming (昆明). It is part of Shilin UNESCO Global Geopark and the serial South China Karst World Heritage property. The importance of the site is geological: water and time have dissolved and sculpted limestone into dense pinnacle fields, corridors, towers and isolated blades that resemble a forest built from rock.
