Luoyang（洛阳） and the Shaolin Temple Scenic Area（少林寺景区） are often sold as a single “ancient China” package, yet they reveal different worlds. The Longmen Grottoes（龙门石窟） line the cliffs beside the Yi River（伊河） with thousands of caves, niches, inscriptions and sculptures from the late Northern Wei and Tang periods.
