Badaling and Mutianyu offer two very different first experiences of the Great Wall. Badaling has the easiest public-transport connections and the broadest visitor infrastructure. Mutianyu feels more scenic and gives stronger walkers a longer ridge walk, with cable-car and chairlift options that remove the steepest approach. Both are restored sections; neither is a wilderness hike.
