Datong（大同） offers one of northern China's clearest conversations between rock-cut sculpture and timber architecture. The Yungang Grottoes（云冈石窟） preserve a major fifth- and sixth-century centre of Buddhist cave art. Huayan Temple（华严寺） and Shanhua Temple（善化寺） bring the story into surviving halls and sculptural ensembles inside the city. Farther south, the Hanging Temple（悬空寺） and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda（应县木塔）, formally the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple（佛宫寺释迦塔）, reveal radically different ways of building with timber.
