Dunhuang（敦煌） was an oasis at a strategic meeting point of the Silk Roads. Its importance survives in several different landscapes: the Buddhist paintings and sculpture of the Mogao Caves（莫高窟）, a spring oasis among immense dunes, and the remains of passes and roads extending into the Gobi. No single attraction explains the place.
